The New Supreme Court Justice

Hey Ya'll! Welcome back to Abbi's Cozy Corner. Today we'll be talking about what it means that Amy Barrett has been elected to the Supreme Court and why it matters.

On October 27th 2020, Amy Barrett was elected to the supreme court to fill the supreme court seat left empty by RBG. Thus making the supreme court 6-3, Republicans. The issue is that Amy Barrett believes in originalism. According to an article titled Supreme Court watchers worry Amy Coney Barrett’s ‘originalism’ could uphold racist policies by Joshua Adams, Originalism is "a judicial philosophy that positions the Constitution as a text with a fixed, “original” meaning. Adherents stand in contrast to “living Constitutionalists”, who view the document as one that evolves and adapts to changing times regardless of whether it is formally amended" (Adams 2020). What this basically means is that rulings should follow the constitution the way that the founding father reccommended. This creates an issue because when the constitution was written, Black people and other minorities were not in thought.

I have an issue with the supreme court as it is because no one should be appointed to a political seat for the rest of their lives. But this in particular pisses me off because the rights of people of color could be harmed. Especially since she was appointed the week before the presidential election. If the results for this election were not going problematic enough, this adds a cherry on top.
